Digitization for vacation parks

La Sapinière implements smart monitoring of vacation rentals

La Sapinière, a popular vacation park in Luxembourg, has a desire to remotely monitor 109 vacation homes to gain insight into the electricity and heating consumption of the homes. The goal is to proactively generate notifications in case of malfunctions or anomalous values. The data generated is then visualized and analyzed in the associated Calculus portal, which is used as a full-fledged management system for numerous business processes based on sensor data.

About vacation park La Sapinière

Vacation Park La Sapinière, or Domaine de la Sapinière, in Luxembourg is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking and water recreation.

The vacation and bungalow park is located in Hosingen, in the beautiful region of Éislek. This region, also called the Luxembourg Ardennes, is known for its rolling landscape with densely forested mountains and valleys, with mostly unspoiled natural beauty.

In addition to natural beauty, you will also find some cultural gems in the area, in the form of fairytale towns like Clervaux and Vianden with their medieval castles.

This combination of nature, culture and the vacation park itself, with its outdoor pool and indoor water park within walking distance, make this a very special destination for your weekend, midweek or long vacation in Luxembourg.

What is energy monitoring?

Energy monitoring is the process of collecting, analyzing and managing energy-related data from various sources using interconnected devices and sensors. This is for the purpose of measuring energy consumption, identifying energy waste, improving energy efficiency and optimizing energy use. Energy monitoring includes smart sensors that capture real-time data on energy consumption, generation and distribution. This data is then analyzed and processed in the Calculus dashboard to generate insights and recommendations on how to optimize energy consumption and reduce costs.

Energy monitoring in vacation park La sapinière

The monitoring includes measuring electricity consumption, where the meter readings from the existing energy meter are read every 15 minutes by the Calculus gateway and visualized in the vacation park dashboard. Hereby, one can graphically visualize the consumption for a chosen time period and cumulatively. An API will also be made available with which the cumulative electricity consumption for a given period can be requested and also read directly into the rental system.

Another feature of the system is the ability to turn off the power from the dashboard, but this required an additional relay in the homes. Alternatively, a button is provided to turn off the heating since heating is the main consumption factor.

At the end of each rental period, energy meter readings are forwarded to the billing software. In this way, the correct consumption appears neatly on the invoice.

Presence detection

Each housing unit is equipped with a motion detector. This detector sends ad hoc notifications to the platform when motion is detected. According to GDPR, it is allowed to take actions based on this data, such as lowering the heating if no motion is detected for a certain period of time.

Intelligent control of the thermostat

From Calculus' Cloud portal, the temperature can be adjusted manually and the heating can also be turned off (for example, on frost-free). The thermostat is automatically linked to the motion detector, enabling the functionalities of the motion sensor to be turned on and off per residential unit during a rental period.

A warm welcome for visitors

A visitor books a property through the reservation system for a certain period of time. At the start of that rental period, Calculus, by remotely controlling the thermostat, provides a warm welcome by bringing the house to 21 degrees in a timely manner. Thus, the resident arrives in a pleasantly heated home.

During the rental period, we measure activity in the homes. If no movement is detected for 2 consecutive hours, Calculus automatically sets the thermostat to 17 degrees. At the end of the rental period, we reset the thermostat to 6 degrees to save energy.

Smoke Detection

In addition, the resort is equipped with smoke detectors in each housing unit. The smoke detectors register smoke due to fire, as well as cigarette smoking or other prohibited activities in the residence. When notified, push messages are forwarded to designated contact numbers/mail addresses and automatic calls and text messages can be sent. The smoke detectors are divided into logical groups and push messages are forwarded upon notifications from detectors in the same group.

In the future, the system can be expanded with additional sensors and functionalities so that the vacation park can be even better monitored and managed. In this regard, the Calculus portal provides a user-friendly and reliable platform to realize this.
